Sony Xperia XZ2: Rumor Roundup Upgraded

The Sony Xperia XZ Premium brought 4K HDR to a Sony flagship along with some competitive internals, while the Xz1 brought some powerful specs in a more midrange, traditional form factor. While it only makes sense to be excited about what’s coming next, Sony has yet to show us the XZ2. For now, we need to stick to the rumor mill. Thankfully, the rumor mill is a fun place to be.

While rumors surrounding the XZ2 aren’t as prevalent as they would be about, say, a new iPhone, there are plenty of whispers for us to latch on to, especially thanks to a leaked spec sheet released on Reddit. Check out our compilation below of the best XZ2 rumors to date.

Early 2018 Announcement, June 2018 Release Date

We know thanks to a forum post on Esato back in September that Sony is rumored to be announcing the Xperia XZ2 at Mobile World Congress in 2018. The expo runs from February 26 to March 1, so if the rumor is true, we could see the XZ2 for the first time towards the end of winter next year.

As for a release date, we don’t have much to go on. However, the Xperia XZ Premium was released in the US in June of 2017, and since it was also announced in February, the safest bet for the XZ2’s release date would be June 2018.

The XZ1 was released one month after it was announced, however, so it’s possible that the XZ2 could be available for purchase as soon as April 2018.

Bezel-Less 4K Display

It seems the XZ2 will be joining the bezel-less revolution. A leaked render from Techie Slate seems to indicate that the next Sony flagship will sport a near edge-to-edge 5.5″ display, featuring a 90% screen-to-body ratio. Digital Trends claims there are rumors the display will be 5.7,” however, they offer no sources.

We also know from the Reddit leak that the resolution of the display will be 4K, which would continue the trend from the XZ Premium.

Snapdragon 845 SoC, 4 GB RAM, 64GB Internal Storage

The rumor is the XZ2 will be a force to be reckoned with when it comes to pure power. Sony is thought to be installing the latest Snapdragon 845 SoC in its newest smartphone, along with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage.

While we’d like to see a higher internal storage option, 4 GB of RAM is good news, even if other Android devices have managed to fit up to twice that amount of memory. We don’t know the clock speed of the XZ2’s Snapdragon chip, however, all should be well so long as Sony commits to the most up-to-date flagship SoC.

Battery & Quick Charging

A smartphone really is only as good as its battery, and the XZ2 is rumored to house a decent one. The 3,420 mAh battery that is thought to be shipping with the Sony phone certainly isn’t huge, like the 4,000 mAh of the Razer Phone. However, we don’t yet know how Sony has optimized the XZ2 to work with that battery. We might see more battery life than other devices with similar mAh ratings thanks to Sony’s minimal Android skin.

One spot of good news is that the XZ2 is expected to ship with quick charging. We don’t know how fast you will be able to charge up, however. That information seems yet to come.

Stay Tuned

It’s still early for XZ2 rumors. Talk is obviously a little thin, so we’ll just have to wait for more information. Keep checking back for the latest Sony buzz, as we’ll update this post as soon as we know more.
