For those of us who love to multitask, picture-in-picture mode is a godsend. The feature, introduced in Android 8.0 Oreo, lets you enjoy videos in a floating window overlaid on top of another app. However, while the OS does have native support, only a select number of apps support the feature.
Despite Oreo being almost a year old and Android 9.0 releasing soon, there are still only a handful of apps that support the feature. Because picture-in-picture (PiP) mode has a limited use-case, only apps that benefit from the new feature have implemented it. As a result, the list is short — but it is growing.
With many apps on the list, you’ll need to enable the feature first before using it. Check out the link below on how to activate PiP in supported apps.
Compatible Apps
- YouTube: Music videos require YouTube Premium. All other videos now work with PiP in the US without a subscription.
- YouTube TV: All live and on-demand content.
- Netflix: Requires Android 8.1 Oreo or higher.
- Twitch: Must be enabled within the app’s settings.
- Google Maps: Turn-by-turn directions support PiP mode.

While this list is small relative to the number of media apps on the market, it continues to grow. We hope other major video streaming services like Hulu, Prime Video, and VRV will eventually add the feature so their customers can enjoy it.
We’ll keep this list updated as we find more apps that support Picture-in-Picture mode, so check back for new entries. If you know of any apps we missed, please share them with us in the comment section below!
