Lawsuits among tech giants is a tale as old as time (or at least as old as the tech world). But one lawsuit between two tech giants appears to be heating up; Apple’s lawsuit against Qualcomm is being met with a countersuit.
The Hill reports Qualcomm filed the countersuit based on “false statements” made by Apple. The company alleges Apple broke several agreements the companies had between each other, but it does not say what those agreements are.
This countersuit is in response to the lawsuit Apple filed against Qualcomm back in January. Apple had claimed Qualcomm was abusing its powerful position in phone manufacturing by overcharging companies for Qualcomm parts.
Interestingly, the Federal Trade Commission filed an antitrust suit against Qualcomm the same month, and their reasons are essentially identical to Apple’s. Qualcomm wants this suit dismissed, as they believe it was filed haphazardly in the remaining days of the Obama administration.
It’s anyone’s guess as to how these events will play out, however, at the moment, Qualcomm has the cards stacked against it. Two similar lawsuits from two separate entities probably won’t work in Qualcomm’s favor, but seeing as they want the FTC case eliminated, they may find themselves on an even battleground with Apple before too long.
