Make $20k Repairing iPhones – Yes, Really!

Are you looking for a get-rich-quick scheme? Need a way to buy that Tesla you lied about having? Well, I don’t know how to get you that. But what I can tell you is there is an emerging market that pays pretty darn well, for work that’s more than interesting. I’m talking, of course, about iPhone repairs.

In a new report, the Wall Street Journal follows Grayson Shaw, a 16-year-old from Nantucket who repairs iPhones. While the work itself is unique for someone so young, what’s even more interesting are his profits — Shaw made almost $24,000 last summer, repairing upwards of nine phones a day.

What I could do if I had that work ethic …

Shaw is the true embodiment of young, entrepreneurial spirit. He’s been in the business since he was 12 years old, and this summer will set up his repair stand outside an ice cream shop. You might mistake his shop for something akin to a lemonade stand, except that instead of selling $1 drinks, Shaw makes up to $189.99 per repair.

Expensive, sure, but what are you going to do, use that broken display until your upgrade? Yeah, right. Pay the kid.

Grayson Shaw isn’t alone in this endeavor — there is a trend of young people taking it upon themselves to repair smartphones. Thanks to the internet, it’s now easier than ever to learn the skills necessary to replace a cracked display. And because many of these repairers are students, they can build their reputations quickly within their network of friends and families.

So, to anyone interested in phone repairs, or anyone looking to up their summer pay, you may want to take a page from these young technicians. After all, $24,000 is nothing to sneeze at.
