Apple has been testing iOS 11.4.1 for just over a month now, and so far, there’s nothing to show for it except unknown “bug fixes” and under-the-hood “improvements.” And that still rings true with the release of iOS 11.4.1 beta 5 on Monday, July 2, which comes exactly one week after beta 4. Now the question is, when will the stable update be pushed out to everyone?
According to the build number for iOS 11.4.1 beta 5, it’s still unclear whether this will be the last beta before a public-wide release to iPhones and other iOS devices. Traditionally, Apple adds an “a” to the end of build numbers indicating that they are beta builds, and the last beta before a wide release omits the “a” indicating it’s likely the last beta version or pseudo-“golden master” build. This one has an “a,” but Apple has pushed out stable releases before without an obvious indication.
But overall, iOS 11.4.1 is nothing to get excited about or wait anxiously for. When it comes out, it comes out, and your iPhone may be more secure and act a little nicer to you, but you won’t find any new features or menu changes. If you’re looking for new features, you’re better off joining the iOS 12 beta to try out all the new features it contains, though, you’ll likely run into a few bugs here and there.
If you’d still like to stick on the iOS 11.4.1 beta, to update to iOS 11.4.1 beta 5, you’ll need to be a developer or public beta tester with a valid configuration profile. Then, open up Settings, tap “General,” and select “Software Update.” Afterward, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install iOS 11.4.1 beta 5 onto your iPhone.

If you’d rather jump on the iOS 12 beta, which is open to both developers and public beta testers, it’s easy to do, and you’ll actually have something new to play around with. While some of your apps may crash and the overall system might be slow, unresponsive at times, or crash itself, it’s worth the risk if you want to be first to try out everything new that Apple has to offer.
