Smartphones tend to struggle when it comes to recording video in low light situations. Danish phone manufacturer Lumigon included a good camera capable of shooting 4K video on its latest phone, The T3, but the real interest lies in the second camera, which is a dedicated night vision shooter.
The T3 is able to take both photos and videos in night vision, making it the first handset to include this feature. It’s a little unsettling to think about what kind of photos and videos someone would take using a night-vision-equipped smartphone, and the T3 base model is priced low enough that a middle-income deviant should have no problem getting his or her hands on the phone.
The T3 starts at a fairly reasonable $740 before tax and shipping, so it’s not quite as fancy as Sirin Labs’s $17,000 Solarin phone, but there are certainly some luxurious options available. Lumigon is releasing diamond-encrusted and 24K gold-plated versions of the T3 so that you can creep in the night in style if you so choose. There’s a partially gold model that will run you $1,200, but Lumigon hasn’t yet said how much the full-gold and diamond models will cost.
In addition to the night vision camera, which uses a dual infrared flash to help take pictures, the T3 also has your traditional rear- and front-facing cameras. The rear camera takes 13 megapixel photos, also with dual flash, and can shoot video in 4K resolution. The front camera shoots 5 MP pictures and can record 2K video.
The phone has a 4.8-inch AMOLED display with a 1280 x 720 resolution. Internally, T3 runs on a Helio X10 2.2 GHz octacore processor with 3 GB of RAM, with 128 GB of on-device storage.
The Killer Feature
There’s also a potentially game-changing feature called BackTouch. It will let you control the phone through a sensor on the back, letting you scroll through apps, webpages, and take selfies with the track on the back, which at the very least might help keep your screen clean from fingerprints.
Having a phone with a night vision camera sounds pretty cool, and there are probably plenty of wholesome uses for it. At the same time, though, there are probably just as many not-so-wholesome uses for it as well. Hopefully the diamonds will help reflect any ambient light, so we’ll be able to spot any fancy deviants lurking in the shadows.
