Google Gemini Gets A New Floating Overlay Panel For Android

Google recently rolled out Gemini Live, a mobile conversational experience that lets you have free-flowing conversations with its Gemini generative AI chatbot, during the Made by Google event on August 13.

Along with this, the company also rolled out a revamped floating overlay panel for its AI assistant on Android devices (via 9to5Google).

This new interface introduces a glowing animation, which can be noticed around the panel when the AI chatbot is activated, indicating Gemini’s engagement by the user.

Introduced first at Google’s I/O 2024 event, this contextual overlay enhances users’ experience with their devices, as it understands what you are doing in the background without taking over your whole screen. In other words, this feature allows Gemini to provide responses in a compact overlay instead of the entire screen while preserving the context of the current task.

Further, there is a dedicated button in the top-right corner for those want to use Gemini in full-screen. Simply tap the top-right corner of the panel to switch Gemini to full-screen mode.

This rollout also brings a new “Ask about this video” chip on top of the Gemini overlay for YouTube content, which replaces the previous “Ask about this screen” option available in Gemini. Users can have Gemini summarize YouTube videos or generate follow-up questions about the content that they are watching.

Additionally, users can easily drag generated images from the panel into other apps, such as Gmail or Google Messages. This drag-and-drop functionality enhances productivity and allows users to streamline their workflow.

While the glowing Gemini floating overlay is still rolling out, its availability remains limited, primarily to select devices, such as Pixel 8 Pro. Google says that the new changes would be available on Android for both Gemini users and Gemini Advanced subscribers in the coming weeks.
