Last week, the internet was ablaze with talk about the Galaxy S8’s home button, because it subtly changes positions without the phone alerting you. This feature was included to stop burn-in issues with the screen, and the general consensus from tech sites was the screens would not experience any burn-in at all.
They were wrong.
Reports today show that the Galaxy S8 is susceptible to burn-in. One article from The Korean Herald details a post by a user on a South Korean internet community about his S8’s display burn-in, saying he had been using the phone for just one week. A regional Samsung office denied the S8’s vulnerability to burn-in images. According to a Seoul Samsung spokesman:
An algorithm to prevent burn-ins is already equipped…Whether the consumer’s claim turns out to be true or not remains to be seen. At the moment, we are not receiving reports of other cases.
This claim is interesting, considering a Reddit user also claims to have experienced burn-in on their S8. User Kougeru posted two days ago with a picture of the issue, stating if you display a blank gray image, the burn-in is visible. Other Reddit users noted similar experiences in the comments.
These complaints contradict not only Samsung’s claims, but reports by publications like TechTimes and SamMobile that said the S8’s display won’t experience burn-in.
While it’s surprising that some users are experiencing screen burn issues in less than a month, the technology behind the display panel being used in the Galaxy S8 has always been susceptible to burn-in. AMOLED displays are far more advanced than traditional LCD screens, but the main drawback to this technology is that it’s been known to have issues with burned-in pixels.
Samsung needs to get on top of this issue, because otherwise, the S8 was looking to be a great comeback to the exploding Note 7. Every PR nightmare, like this one, is just another reminder of the disasters of the past.
