If I could think of one thing the world was missing, it would surely be more tablets. While people struggle between shelling out 200 to 500 dollars for a new iPad, Nexus 7, Kindle Fire, Microsoft Surface, or one of the hundred other tablets on the market, the folks over at DreamWorks have decided to make their own, aptly named the Dreamtab.
The Dreamtab will have an 8-inch screen and favor applications with the use of a stylus, for coloring and the like. Total cost is rumored to be under 300 dollars. DreamWorks Animation has created some of the greatest adult-friendly kids movies, like the Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon, and the company believes that adding a tablet to their resume will be a successful venture.
I strongly disagree.
To say the tablet market is over-saturated is a gross understatement. But DreamWorks hired Fuhu, a company already in the tablet realm with their Nabi line. The companies believe that creative and exclusive content (DreamWorks will create character-based games and activities) will help the Dreamtab gain a following versus favored iPads and Kindles.
“By teaming with DreamWorks to create a device that will have original content—original content that is automatically and frequently updated—we are not following consumers, we are getting ahead of them,” Jim Mitchell, Fuhu’s chief executive, told the New York Times.
I think what he is saying is that they are creating a product that no one asked for, but might want sometime in the future. Only in CEO talk, it sounds a lot better than that. Being “ahead” of the consumers that are supposed to buy your product isn’t necessarily a good thing. Yes, I am talking about you, Google Glass.
