Apple’s iOS 13.6 Upgrade: Exciting News, Health Tracker, CarKey Support & More

Apple just released iOS 13.6, and while there aren’t a ton of new features here, there are some pretty amazing ones to be on the lookout for.

One of the most prominent new features is CarKey support, which was teased during the iOS 14 presentation at WWDC 2020. With it, you can remotely control compatible vehicles with just your iPhone. You can even share CarKey passes with friends that have iPhones and customize the permissions. That way, a user can only unlock, start, and drive your car, and not mess with any other features or settings.

Another significant feature is the symptom tracker in Health. The new section, dubbed “Symptoms,” lets you track issues like headache, fever, cough, and more, just like you would any other health-related problem in the app. The update is a welcomed addition during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the world is more focused on tracking symptoms than ever.

Other changes to iOS include more advanced settings for automatic software downloads and several bug patches. Besides those, Apple News got some attention this time around; there’s now Apple News Today briefs, Apple News+ Audio, configurable local news spotlights, new swipe icons, the return of the black buttons, and a toggle for your email subscription.

The July 15 software update comes 44 days after iOS 13.5.1, as well as six days after the first public beta for iOS 14. Apple released iOS 13.6 at 10 a.m. PDT, the company’s standard release time for major software updates.

If your iPhone isn’t compatible with iOS 13, however, you aren’t out of luck. As long as it can run iOS 12, you’ll find an update for iOS 12.4.8 today. While it doesn’t offer much in the way of new features and changes, 12.4.8 adds bug fixes and stability patches you’ll want to take advantage of.

To download and install iOS 13.6 or 12.4.8 on your iPhone, open the Settings app, tap “General,” then tap “Software Update.” Next, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the update. If you have Automatic Updates enabled, you can simply let your iPhone update overnight.

Just updated your iPhone? You’ll find new emoji, enhanced security, podcast transcripts, Apple Cash virtual numbers, and other useful features. There are even new additions hidden within Safari. Find out what’s new and changed on your iPhone with the iOS 17.4 update.
