Apple’s Huge Order: 70M OLED Displays from Samsung! 📱

In a move that confirms previous speculation, Apple has placed a large OLED display order from Samsung for its next iPhone. At 70 million display units, the order is a large one to be sure, but when stacked against previous iPhone sales, it’s no wonder the rumors say there won’t be enough 2017 iPhones to meet demand.

According to CNET, Apple sold 78.3 million iPhones in Q4 2016, just over eight million more units than displays it has ordered from Samsung. If Apple’s next iPhone mirrors these sales, there will be more demand than there will be product.

Interestingly, according to Nikkei, a Japanese news outlet, Samsung is aiming to produce 95 million display units for Apple, even though Apple has only formally ordered 70 million. This may increase the number of units available to consumers. However, Nikkei also reports the possibility that some of the 70 million units would not even be sold this year, instead made ready for sale in 2018.

The information surrounding Apple’s next iPhone, rumored to be called the iPhone X or the iPhone 8, is still thin. Until we have stronger details about the production and execution, it is tough to say how many phones will be released in 2017, or how many of us will have to wait patiently until the following year.
