Apple Drops Another Beta: iOS 12.3 Public Beta 2 Brings Wallet & Date/Time Tweaks

Apple just released the second public beta for iOS 12.3 today, Tuesday, April 9, one day after the release of the iOS 12.3 developer beta 2. This update introduces new Japanese “Date & Time” updates as well as changes to Wallet transactions. Overall, iOS 12.3 includes Apple TV Channels, premium monthly subscriptions with content available directly in the TV app across the Apple ecosystem.

Because iOS 12.3 dev beta 2 came out yesterday, we know the only major addition to this update, announced by Apple, features new Japanese changes to “Date & Time” settings. You’ll see support for the Reiwa era of the Japanese calendar, as well as a change where the first year of Japanese-calendar era is represented as “Gannen” in place of a previous character. Be warned, however, as you might come across a bug if you set the system time ahead of May 1 while using Japanese as the system language and calendar.

  • Update: iOS 12.3 Public Beta 5 Released with Accessibility & Time Fixes

You’ll also notice small visual changes to your transaction history in the Wallet app. When you make purchases in Safari or other apps on your iPhone, you will see them listed as “In-App Purchases” at the bottom of the card view. This change is in line with the update in iOS 12.3 beta 1 that changed the “building” icon next to transactions to a grey square with a white dot in the middle.

While we can’t know for sure, it’s likely beta 2 also features a few bug fixes for issues found in beta, with the possibility of security patches for any iOS vulnerabilities. Check out the full release notes for iOS 12.3 beta 2 below.

Date and Time — New Features

  • Support for the Reiwa era of the Japanese calendar, which begins on May 1, 2019, is now available. The first year of Japanese-calendar era is represented as “Gannen,” except in the shorter numeric-style formats which typically also use the narrow era name; for example: “R1/05/01”. (27323929)

Known Issues

  • You might experience unexpected behavior while changing the system time ahead to May 1 when using a device with the system language and calendar set to Japanese. (49371044)
