Always Updated List of Phones Getting Android Oreo: Find out if your device made the cut!

| Updated February 11, 2019 with new phones.

When will my phone get Android Oreo? That’s a question still being asked by many, even this late in 2018. Most OEMs have answered this question in one way or another, either releasing a stable OTA or confirming their device won’t be receiving the update. We consolidated all these responses, and here’s where we stand.

At the time of this writing, Android 9.0 Pie is out on a handful of devices. While it will probably be at least until mid-2019 when a good portion of phones run this version, almost all major releases since 2017 should have the second-latest version of Android. And unlike previous years, this update will be important.

Google introduced a policy that all new apps and updates must target the second-newest version of Android, with a deadline of one year into its release. Right now, the first deadline for Android Oreo has passed, which requires all new apps to target this version. On November 1, all updates to existing apps must target Oreo as well. What this means is that more apps will take advantage of Android Oreo’s new changes, including improved notification channels, better security, and picture-in-picture mode.

About This List

For the purposes of this article, there are three stages: Unconfirmed, Confirmed and Beta. Unconfirmed will list any phone which currently doesn’t have an Oreo update or was confirmed by the OEM that will not receive it. Confirmed is for phones which the OEM has stated they will release the update but the OTA isn’t available as of yet. Beta is for the few devices that are running an Oreo beta version and not stable.

For phones with confirmed Oreo updates or existing builds, their name will be bold and either the download link or confirmation page will be linked when available.

Essential

The list of phones Essential made in 2017 is fairly short, as the PH-1 is the first device ever released from the young company. With only one phone to support, you would think Essential would have an easier time getting out timely updates, but it wasn’t released until mid-March (though, it was an 8.1 update, so we’ll cut them some slack).

Google

One of the main perks of purchasing a Pixel or Nexus device is the timely Android OS updates. As with previous software updates, Google always releases the newest version of Android first on their own lineup, which includes Nexus and Pixel. For Nexus, this is the last official update from Google, as we’ve already seen they will not be receiving Android 9.0 Pie.

ASUS

ASUS’s track record has been up and down when it comes to updates. While ASUS has promised that many of their phones will get Android Oreo, there is still a large number of phones missing the official update.

HTC

HTC has updated their entire flagship lineup to Android Oreo. Every phone from the HTC 10 to HTC U12+ runs the second-latest version of Android. Good job HTC.

Huawei/Honor

Despite their limited market share in the US, Huawei has been pretty good with updating their phones in the past, and Oreo is no exception. All their US-launched phones run EMUI 8.0 on top of Android 8.0 or 8.1 Oreo.

  • Honor 6X: Stable OTA available
  • Honor 7X: Stable OTA available
  • Honor 8: Stable OTA available
  • Huawei Mate 9: Stable OTA available
  • Huawei Mate 10 Pro: Android Oreo out of the box
  • Huawei Mate SE: Stable OTA available
  • Honor View10: Android Oreo out of the box

LG

LG has been historically bad when it comes to updating their phones. They plan to change this with their new Software Center, but so far, all we’ve really seen is a few more security patches. However, changes are coming, as the two-year-old V20 has just received Android Oreo, and LG is promising the three-year-old G5 will get it as well.

  • LG G5: Stable OTA available (Verizon | T-Mobile)
  • LG G6: Stable OTA available
  • LG G7 ThinQ: Android Oreo out of the box
  • LG Q6: Confirmed
  • LG Q7+: Android Oreo out of the box
  • LG V20: Stable OTA available (Verizon | T-Mobile | AT&T)
  • LG V30: Stable OTA available
  • LG V30S: Android Oreo out of the box
  • LG V35: Android Oreo out of the box

Motorola

Historically, Motorola is one of the best Android OEMs when it comes to quick updates. This year has been no exception, with the majority of the lineup already receiving a stable over the air update. Only the E series won’t be receiving the update, as the G series waits for wireless carriers to push out the update.

Nokia

Nokia has only been on the Android scene for two years and has already made a name for themselves with constant updates. All 2018 phones released in the US are part of the Android One program, where updates are handled by Google. For 2017 phones, Nokia has pretty much got everyone up to Oreo, with a chance of them also receiving Android 9.0 Pie.

  • Nokia 2: Beta
  • Nokia 3.1: Android Oreo out of the box
  • Nokia 6: Stable OTA Available
  • Nokia 6.1: Android Oreo out of the box

OnePlus

Over the past few years, OnePlus has taken some criticism for their Android OS update practices. Android Oreo is scheduled to be the final major OS update for the OnePlus 3 and 3T, and both of them have already received their initial Oreo update. The OnePlus 5 and 5T also have stable Oreo versions and are actually running stable Android 8.1 already.

Samsung

As the largest Android OEM, Samsung pushes out a ton of devices every year. While Samsung never officially confirms OS updates before release, a leaked Oreo schedule appeared online in November 2017. The leaked document speculates that older flagships like the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will get Oreo, as well as the Note 5. In addition, a number of phones in Samsung’s A line of phones are scheduled to get the update.

Due to the speculative nature of this leak, nearly all Samsung phones are currently in the rumored status, with a few notable exceptions. Both the Galaxy S8 and S8+, as well as the Galaxy Note 8, have already been updated to Oreo.

  • Galaxy A6 (2018): Android Oreo out the box
  • Galaxy J3 (2017): Confirmed

  • Galaxy S7 Edge: Confirmed
  • Galaxy S8: Stable OTA available
  • Galaxy S8+: Stable OTA available
  • Galaxy S9: Android Oreo out of the box
  • Galaxy S9+: Android Oreo out of the box

Sony

Sony promised to update a good portion of phones to Oreo, including several which are over two years old. They did deliver on this promise, releasing a stable OTA to all phones. Great job Sony!

  • Xperia Touch: Stable OTA Available
  • Xperia X: Stable OTA Available
  • Xperia X Compact: Stable OTA Available
  • Xperia X Performance: Stable OTA available
  • Xperia XA1: Stable OTA Available

  • Xperia XZ2: Android Oreo out of the box
  • Xperia XZ2 Compact: Android Oreo out of the box
  • Xperia XZ2 Premium: Android Oreo out of the box
  • Xperia XZ3: Android Pie out of the box

ZTE

ZTE surprised many this year when they announced the two-year-old Axon 7 would be getting Oreo. However, it doesn’t appear their other phones will be getting Oreo love any time soon. Also, the way ZTE is applying the update is unconventional.

  • Axon 7:Stable Update (must be manually updated via microSD)
  • Axon 7 Mini: Unconfirmed
  • Axon M: Unconfirmed
  • ZMAX Pro: Unconfirmed
