Get rid of those pesky emoji suggestions in the new Swype for Android!

As the granddaddy of all gesture-based keyboards, Swype has seen quite a few updates in its day. A recent version bump, however, added a feature that has been universally panned by Swype users.

In an attempt to integrate emojis into their gesture-based input method, Swype developers have added word suggestions that aren’t words at all. When you type in certain words, you (almost randomly) get emojis as spell check suggestions, à la SwiftKey.

Problem is, this “feature” isn’t intuitive at all. If you’re looking for a particular emoji, typing out words is a terrible way to find it. Then if you’re not a fan of emojis, all these suggestions do is get in the way.

So developer arpruss created an Xposed module that will disable these silly emoji suggestions altogether. With this one installed, you can reclaim the wasted space in your spell check list.

Requirements

Download “SwypeNoEmoji”

To begin, head to the “Download” section of your Xposed Installer app and search for SwypeNoEmoji, then tap the top result.

From here, swipe over to the Versions tab, then hit the “Download” button next to the most recent entry.

Within a few seconds, Android’s installer interface should come right up, so tap “Install” on this screen.

When that’s finished, you’ll get a notification from Xposed telling you that the module hasn’t been activated yet and that a reboot is needed. Just tap the “Activate and reboot” button on this notification, and Xposed will take care of the rest for you.

When you get back up, no further setup is required. The emoji suggestions will have completely disappeared from your Swype keyboard, and the space will now be occupied strictly by suggested words.

(1) Before (emoji present), (2) After (emoji absent)
