Apple’s anxiously awaited iPhone 8 with a 5.8-inch OLED display is all set to launch this September, alongside the iPhone 7s variants. However, according to MacRumors, which cites information from a number of Barclays analysts, stock will be very limited, and most won’t ship until late in the fourth quarter.
The iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPhone Pro, iPhone Edition, or whatever name you want to call Apple’s rumored tenth-anniversary smartphone, will still be announced and released in September—you just might not be able to get your hands on one right away. There will be plenty of iPhone 7s and 7s Plus models available to preorder, but that might not sound very enticing if you already own an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus.
According to the Barclays research note obtained by MacRumors, the analysts stated:
Suppliers generally had good things to say about the upcoming iPhone 8 launch (for our purposes iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus, and iPhone Pro) as new features drive a more complicated manufacturing process and higher ASPs. We now believe that all three devices will feature wireless charging and will all be launched in the normal September timeframe, although the majority of iPhone Pro volumes may not be available until Q4.
The current Barclays report differs from a previous report which stated that the iPhone 8 would not be ready for sale in time for the September launch.
It’s looking like the iPhone with the OLED display might have a similar track record to the iPhone 7 Plus in Jet Black, when production of the specific Jet Black-colored iPhone suffered from “a low casing production yield rate of 60–70%,” according to Ming-Chi Kuo, famed analyst for KGI Securities, and one of the most reliable sources for Apple rumors. The Jet Black iPhone was almost nowhere to be found during the holiday season last year, and when there was stock available, the sleek-colored phone sold out in seconds.
Also in the report is a confirmation of Kuo’s previous predictions, which said that the phone will have a 5.8-inch display with 5.15 inches of usable screen. Touch ID is expected to be embedded within the display, eliminating bezels and creating space for virtual buttons. The phone is rumored to have wireless charging, but the wireless accessories are to be sold independently from the phone.
Lastly, as we’ve previously learned from Kuo, the analysts believe that the iPhone 8 will have a stacked logic board design providing more space for a larger battery. The analysts also believe that the phone will include “a front-facing 3D sensor module, the same dual camera setup as the iPhone 7 Plus, and a film-based Force Touch solution.”
